DCOTA Competition Pairs Young Designers with Local Personalities to Create One-of-a-Kind Looks
October 1, 2006

DANIA BEACH, FL – Park Avenue classic modern meets Florida hip is what South Florida designer A. Keith Powell envisioned for Palm Beach Socialite Mrs. Andrea Stark's dining room as his entry for DCOTA's Design Challenge, with the latest installment debuting at the DCOTA FALL Market on November 15, 2006.

This is the third in a series of four, one-of-a-kind room creations from South Florida’s hottest young designers chosen to participate in this competition, which began in June with installments being debuted over the course of the year. The Design Challenge showcases examples of traditional, modern and contemporary designs appealing to South Florida’s savvy, international residents. Each of the four designers was asked to design a dramatic custom room, evoking the essence of the personal style of four pre-eminent Palm Beach tastemakers. Designers were given free reign in DCOTA to create custom rooms on a pre-built set.
Understanding Mrs. Stark’s reputation as the consummate entertainer, Powell created a dining room design that embodies her charisma and over-the-top penchant for entertaining.

"I decided to mix classically modern design with things that are hip, fresh and edgy using a 1960s Murano glass chandelier, a Jan Showers banquette in powder blue linen mixed with lizard covered armchairs in chocolate suede," says Powell. Anchoring the look, he adorned the dining room table with more than a dozen pieces of red coral from Mrs. Stark’s collection, which were mounted on rock crystal bases. "She has a spectacular collection, which served as the ideal tomato red accent color."

Powell's design will debut with a private VIP opening reception hosted by Palm Beach Cottages & Gardens magazine, where it will be on view at DCOTA for two weeks. All rooms will be featured in future issues of Palm Beach Cottages & Gardens magazine, of which the editors will select the winner to be announced at the DCOTA 2007 WINTERMARKET.
